The National Elections Reform Agenda (NERA) was officially launched on Saturday, the 23rd of March 2024, in a momentous event that marked a new chapter in Zimbabwe’s quest for electoral integrity and democratic governance.

Addressing a gathering of esteemed guests, members of NERA, and fellow citizens, Manyara Irene Muyenziwa, the Convener of NERA, delivered a powerful speech highlighting the significance of this launch.

Muyenziwa emphasized the challenges facing the current electoral system, including the lack of independence of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) and the alignment of security forces with political parties, which undermine the credibility of elections and erode trust in the democratic system.

She underscored the importance of advocating for electoral reforms to uphold democratic principles and ensure that the will of the people is accurately reflected in election outcomes. By aligning with key international instruments such as the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights and the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections, NERA aims to promote free, fair, and credible elections in Zimbabwe.

Muyenziwa called on Zimbabwe to adhere to these standards to enhance its legitimacy and stability as a democratic nation, emphasizing the need for transparency, inclusivity, and respect for human rights in the electoral process. She highlighted the importance of gender equality in political participation and decision-making, stressing the need to include women in all aspects of governance.

As NERA officially launched on this historic day, Muyenziwa’s speech resonated with hope and determination, setting the stage for a new era of democratic governance in Zimbabwe. The coalition’s commitment to advocating for electoral reforms and upholding democratic values signals a promising future for the nation, where every citizen’s voice is heard and every vote truly counts.
