Nollywood Mourns: Comedy Icon Amaechi Muonagor Passes Away at 62 After Kidney Battle

Nollywood luminary Amaechi Muonagor, renowned for his comedic genius, has passed away at the age of 62 due to complications from kidney failure, as confirmed by a family member speaking to the BBC.

Having battled with kidney issues and undergoing dialysis treatments, Muonagor succumbed to his condition on Sunday, leaving behind a legacy that had endeared him to audiences far and wide.

His cousin, Tony Muonagor, known in the entertainment circles as Tony Oneweek, conveyed the somber news to BBC News Pidgin, marking the end of an era for Nigerian cinema.

The news of Muonagor’s demise follows closely on the heels of his public plea for assistance to finance a critical kidney transplant procedure in India. Despite the outpouring of support from fans, his health continued to deteriorate, culminating in his untimely passing.

Throughout his illustrious career, Muonagor graced the screens in numerous memorable roles, notably in the beloved classic “Aki and Paw Paw,” where he portrayed the father figure to mischievous teenagers, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of viewers.

Nominated for the prestigious Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards in 2017 for his outstanding performance, Muonagor’s contributions to the Nigerian film industry remain etched in cinematic history.

His demise comes as yet another blow to Nollywood, following the recent loss of another beloved star, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, who similarly battled health issues.
