In a shocking and heartbreaking incident, Amos Rutendo Nyamangodo, a resident of Nyanga, was apprehended last Friday for the brutal assault that led to the death of his 14-year-old daughter, Rufaro Nyamangodo.
The father is accused of fatally beating his daughter after suspecting her of having an affair with a neighbor. The tragic event occurred on December 23, 2023, at Mangwanda Village, Mutasa, Honde Valley.
Amos Rutendo Nyamangodo allegedly employed a mulberry tree switch to assault his daughter, resulting in her untimely death a few days later on December 29, 2023.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest and provided additional details on the horrific incident.
He stated, “Police in Nyanga have arrested Amos Rutendo Nyamangodo in connection with a case of murder in which his daughter, Rufaro Nyamangodo aged 14, died on December 29, 2023, after allegedly being hit with a mulberry tree switch all over the body on 23 December 2023, at Mangwanda Village, Mutasa, Honde Valley. The suspect had allegedly accused the victim of having an affair with a neighbour.”
Regrettably, such cases of parents resorting to extreme violence against their children are not uncommon in Zimbabwe.
A prevalent belief in the efficacy of corporal punishment as a means of disciplining offspring continues to contribute to such tragic occurrences.
