Palestinian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Dr. Tamer Almassri, has strongly condemned Israel’s bombing of a tent camp in Gaza’s al-Mawasi, designated as a “safe zone.” The airstrikes, carried out with F-16 fighter jets reportedly supplied by colonial governments, claimed the lives of at least 21 civilians, including women and children, and left over 80 others injured. The attack, which targeted tents sheltering 14 families, sparked massive fires, leaving survivors in anguish.
Dr. Almassri decried the strikes as war crimes and criticized the international complicity in Israel’s ongoing military actions. “These crimes blatantly violate international law, particularly the Geneva Convention on the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War,” he stated, calling attention to Israel’s disregard for a legally binding decision by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to halt its military offensive in Rafah.
The incident comes amid an intensified Israeli assault on Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza. Residents fleeing the area face continued attacks, which Dr. Almassri described as part of “a full-fledged Israeli ethnic cleansing campaign.” He urged the global community to hold Israel accountable for its actions, emphasizing the legal and moral obligations to protect civilian lives and enforce international humanitarian laws.
The ambassador highlighted the catastrophic toll of Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza since October 2023. At least 44,532 Palestinians have been killed, with over 105,000 injured. An additional 10,000 people remain unaccounted for, presumed dead beneath the rubble of destroyed homes.
Dr. Almassri called for immediate international intervention to end what he labeled as a genocidal campaign. “The international community must act decisively to stop Israel’s aggression, ensure compliance with international law, and bring perpetrators of these crimes to justice,” he said.
As the humanitarian crisis deepens, global leaders and human rights organizations face mounting pressure to address the situation. Gaza’s infrastructure lies in ruins, with families displaced and essential services severely disrupted. Advocacy groups have echoed Dr. Almassri’s appeal for an end to the violence and the establishment of accountability mechanisms.
With Gaza’s civilians bearing the brunt of the conflict, the question of international inaction looms large, raising urgent concerns about the effectiveness of existing global systems in safeguarding human rights and upholding justice.
