Pardon Dziva, a Prosecutor in Henrietta Rushwaya’s Gold Smuggling Case, Sentenced to 8 Years for Fraud

Pardon Dziva, a public prosecutor at the Harare Magistrates’ Court, and his co-accused Alex Tombe, both facing fraud charges, appeared today at the Harare High Court for sentencing.

On November 15, 2023, Dziva asked Wellington Takavarasha for USD 20,000 in order to get Henrietta Rushwaya, who had been found guilty of smuggling by a Harare High Court judge, a less severe sentence.

Takavarasha told Helliate Rushwaya, Henrietta’s sister, about Dziva’s request. After receiving a report from Helliate, the Zimbabwe Republic Police Anti-Corruption Unit launched a sting investigation.

Helliate consented to meet the accused at the CABS Center, where Tombe confronted her and said Pardon Dziva had sent him to retrieve the money. Helliate insisted on giving Dziva the money herself. After that, they took a car to Milton Park’s Kebab Restaurant, where they ran into Dziva. Both defendants were arrested after Helliate gave Dziva the trap money in her vehicle.

Dziva received a 10-year prison term, with two years suspended for a further five years provided she didn’t commit the same crime. Tombe received an 8-year sentence with a 2-year suspension under the same terms.
