Renovation works at the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals are in their final stretch, with the project now 99 percent complete, as Prevail International shifts focus to the broader rehabilitation of Zimbabwe’s central medical institutions, including the upcoming upgrade of Sally Mugabe Central Hospital .
The extensive facelift, which falls under the Presidential Hospital Renovation Programme, has seen the transformation of key infrastructure at the country’s largest referral hospital.
According to Prevail International’s Public Relations Officer, Tariro Dondo, the project has delivered state-of-the-art facilities now ready to serve the public.
“The project is 99 percent complete, we have delivered a state-of-the-art facility which is going to help a lot of people,” said Dondo.
The refurbishment has focused on critical areas including Adlam House, nurses’ accommodation and the Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Ward.
At Adlam House, the number of rooms has been increased from approximately 350 to 369, with the addition of modern amenities including a swimming pool for student recreational use .
Technical upgrades have addressed longstanding infrastructure challenges.
Prevail International has installed a 100 kW solar power unit with battery storage and drilled eight solar-powered boreholes to ensure water security across the hospital complex .
The water infrastructure includes a 30 000-litre reserve, guaranteeing uninterrupted supply for both residents and clinical services .
Medical capacity has been significantly enhanced with the establishment of a 21-bed renal dialysis unit and a dedicated paediatric operating theatre.
New diagnostic equipment, including CT scanners and digital X-ray machines, has been installed to reduce reliance on external referrals .
The rehabilitation of Adlum House, the student nurses’ residence, represents a major investment in healthcare worker welfare.
The facility, which had become nearly uninhabitable and was operating at just 40 of its 353-bed capacity due to broken sanitation systems, has been completely overhauled .
“We have done the electric work, we have done the plumbing work. Previously there were a lot of leakages in the building, the bathrooms were out of order, but we have managed to fix that. We have added four extra bathrooms on each floor so that it caters for the 353 students,” said Prevail International projects manager.
A sustainability drive has seen over 200 solar panels installed on Adlum House, providing backup for lighting, hot water, and security to counter power outages that frequently disrupt essential services .
Health Minister Dr. Douglas Mombeshora conducted an inspection in January 2026, confirming the project’s advanced stage.
“After touring, I can say Adlam House is 99 percent complete, what is just left is cleaning up and we should be good to go,” he said.
The refurbishment programme was triggered by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s unannounced visit to Parirenyatwa and Sally Mugabe Central Hospital in June 2025 to assess prevailing conditions at the country’s major referral facilities .
Following that visit, Prevail International was mobilised to undertake the rehabilitation works .
The Presidential Hospital Renovation Programme is now set to expand to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital, with Prevail International expected to lead similar rehabilitation efforts at the Harare facility.
The initiative aims to restore public health institutions to world-class standards as part of the government’s Vision 2030 strategy .
Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Hon. Danile Garwe, during a recent inspection tour that the government is prioritizing the transformation of all public health institutions.
“This initiative is not just about infrastructure. It is about dignity, modern service delivery and investing in a healthcare system that speaks to the aspirations of our people,” said Hon. Garwe.
Prevail International has indicated that the Parirenyatwa model will be replicated at other health facilities across the country.
“Prevail International is a multi-conglomerate projects company that aims to conduct these initiatives at other health facilities across the country.
“As Prevail, we follow the President’s mantra of leaving no one and no place behind,” Dondo added .
The renovations have already yielded tangible benefits for patients. The hospital attends to approximately 3 400 patients daily, and early responses indicate improved satisfaction levels .
One patient at Parirenyatwa expressed appreciation for the government efforts, “We are happy with the renovations and the service I got here was top notch, we are getting closer to Vision 2030” .
Student nurses have also welcomed the changes.
A nurse trainee who resides at Adlum Hostel commented on the transformation: “For years, the hostels were in a terrible state. Now we finally have decent living conditions, and that motivates us as students. It feels like we are valued again” .
Phase One of the Parirenyatwa refurbishment is scheduled for full completion, with Adlam House now ready for handover. The Nurses’ Training Centre has been completed, while the Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Wing is targeted for finalisation .
Officials confirm that similar timelines will be established for Sally Mugabe Central Hospital as Prevail International mobilises resources for the next phase of the Presidential Hospital Renovation Programme .
