In a shocking twist, Detective Inspector Titus Phiri, recently recognized as Police Officer of the Year, has been arrested for allegedly releasing over a dozen prisoners so they could celebrate New Year’s Eve.

According to a press release issued by the Zambia Police Service on Wednesday, Phiri, who was reportedly intoxicated, “forcibly seized cell keys” early Tuesday morning.

He then unlocked both male and female cells and instructed detainees to leave, telling them they were free to “cross over into the New Year.”

The incident has sparked outrage and disbelief, with authorities now conducting a manhunt for 13 escapees who remain at large.

Among the detainees who fled are individuals facing serious charges, including assault and theft.

“The Zambia Police Service reiterates its commitment to upholding law and order and assures the public that decisive action will be taken against any officer found to be abusing their authority or acting contrary to the law,” the statement read.

Phiri, whose commendation as Police Officer of the Year had highlighted his prior dedication to duty, now faces severe repercussions for his actions.

Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga described the incident as “a betrayal of public trust” and emphasized the need for accountability within the force.

Residents of the area have expressed mixed reactions, with some condemning Phiri’s actions as reckless while others sympathizing with his apparent lapse in judgment.

“It’s shocking to hear this about someone we admired,” said one local resident. But it’s also a reminder that police officers are human, too.”

As the manhunt continues, authorities have urged anyone with information on the escapees’ whereabouts to come forward.

Meanwhile, Phiri remains in custody and is awaiting disciplinary proceedings and potential criminal charges.

The incident has cast a shadow over the festive season in Zambia, raising serious questions about law enforcement and discipline within the nation’s police force.
