A convicted rapist Brian Shereni, already serving time for aggravated indecent assault, has blamed a popular radio show for influencing his latest offence.
The incident occurred at Chikurubi Maximum Prison, where Shereni, a former DJ, assaulted a fellow inmate.
Shereni admitted to the crime while giving his mitigation before Magistrate Sandra Mupindu. He claimed that on the night of the assault, he and other inmates were listening to the Tilda Moyo show on StarFM, a program known for discussing s*xual and domestic issues. According to Shereni, the show aroused him and triggered his actions.
When questioned by the court, Shereni admitted this was not his first time engaging in sexual activities in prison. He revealed that his previous two encounters were consensual and had only resulted in internal disciplinary action by prison authorities.
“This was not my first time,” Shereni confessed. “The other two incidents were consensual, and we were just punished in prison. However, this time I made a mistake and forced myself on my cellmate, which I acknowledge was wrong.”

The latest assault occurred in October last year in Cell E at Chikurubi Maximum Prison. Shereni was already serving a 20-year sentence, handed down on February 15, 2024, for a previous aggravated indecent assault conviction.
In his closing argument, prosecutor Zvikomborero Mupasa emphasised Shereni’s lack of remorse and urged the court to impose the maximum sentence.
“He violated the complainant’s rights,” Mupasa stated. The offender’s record indicates a high likelihood of reoffending, despite his plea of guilty and apology. The aggravating factors far outweigh the mitigating circumstances, and the court should not hesitate to issue the maximum penalty.”
We expect the court to deliver its verdict on sentencing soon.
