A Harare-based businessman, Joseph Maruta, 40, was robbed of nearly US$185,000 in cash and a firearm while spending the night at his girlfriend’s residence in Springvale, Ruwa, authorities have confirmed.
Maruta had earlier travelled to a farm in Kwekwe on Saturday, where he received US$181,000 as payment for a potato seed supply deal.
Upon returning to his Kambuzuma residence, he collected his licensed firearm, reportedly loaded with two magazines, before heading out to visit his partner, Leoba Hunda, in Ruwa.
Reports indicate that after securing the property for the night, Maruta placed a bag containing the money and his firearm inside the house. Around 2 a.m., an alarm went off. Hunda briefly stepped outside to check and informed Maruta that the disturbance came from a nearby property.
It wasn’t until the following morning that Maruta noticed the bag was missing. A closer look revealed that the rear windscreen of his vehicle had been shattered, indicating a possible break-in during the night.
Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, spokesperson for the Harare provincial police, confirmed the case. “We are investigating a suspected unlawful entry and theft incident in Ruwa. The rear window of the complainant’s vehicle was found broken, and a firearm along with US$184,900 was reported stolen,” he stated.
The story quickly gained traction online, sparking mixed reactions. One user, @Clever Mukwenya, quipped, “This is when you realise your wife’s ‘come home early’ isn’t nagging; it’s preventative financial advice!” Another, @Winnie Anesu, speculated about a possible inside job, saying, “Wouldn’t be surprised if the wife orchestrated this; sometimes karma charges interest!”
As of the latest update, no suspects have been apprehended, and police investigations remain underway.
