Two robotic dogs have officially joined the Qingdao Fire and Rescue Brigade in Shandong Province, east China, to assist in firefighting and rescue operations.

The quadruped robots, weighing approximately 70 kg each, are equipped with advanced technologies to enhance emergency response capabilities.

The robots, designed for mobility in hazardous environments, can move at a maximum speed of five meters per second and operate continuously for over three hours.

They possess intelligent features such as autonomous standing after a fall and self-balancing, allowing them to navigate areas with thick smoke, extreme temperatures, and toxic gases.

Equipped with a rapid laser scanning system, the robotic dogs can transmit high-definition live footage in real-time, enabling command personnel to conduct remote visual monitoring.

Their gas sensors provide precise detection and real-time data transmission, while a dual-light gimbal system enhances visibility by penetrating smoke and tracking heat sources.

This technology enables accurate temperature distribution mapping of individuals and the environment, providing crucial support for rescue operations.

With this technology, we can assess disaster situations remotely, allowing us to develop more scientific and safer rescue plans.

This will greatly enhance our command efficiency and accuracy,” said Ling Ming, a firefighter with the Information and Communication Division of the Qingdao Fire Rescue Brigade.

Footage from recent tests showed the robotic dogs climbing stairs, carrying out operations in simulated scenarios, and being remotely controlled by firefighters.

Their onboard cameras provided real-time visuals of the rescue environment, demonstrating their potential to improve situational awareness and safety in emergencies.

The deployment of these robotic dogs marks a significant advancement in China’s emergency response capabilities, reflecting the growing integration of artificial intelligence and robotics in disaster management.
