Russia force have launched a significant counter-offensive against Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region, reclaiming control over around 10 settlements, according to pro-Moscow war bloggers and a senior Russian commander.
The counter-offensive comes after Ukraine’s bold attack on August 6, where thousands of troops, supported by drones and Western-made arms, burst through the border into western Russia.
Major General Apti Alaudinov, commander of Chechnya’s Akhmat special forces, reported that Russian forces had gone on the offensive, liberating around 10 settlements in the Kursk region. However, Reuters was unable to verify the battlefield reports due to reporting restrictions on both sides of the war. The Russian defense ministry’s reports on the fighting provided little information, and there was no immediate comment from Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously stated that his forces controlled 100 settlements in the Kursk region, covering an area of over 1,300 square kilometers. However, pro-Russian military bloggers, including Yuri Podolyaka, Rybar, and the Two Majors, reported that Russian forces had begun a significant counter-offensive in Kursk, pushing Ukrainian forces back.
The counter-offensive has seen Russian forces take several villages on the western flank of the Ukrainian wedge, reducing their control near the state border. Podolyaka specifically mentioned that Russian forces had pushed Ukrainian troops to the east of the Malaya Loknya River, south of Snagost.
The developments in the Kursk region mark a significant turning point in the conflict, as Russian force seek to regain control over the territory seized by Ukraine. The situation remains fluid, with both sides providing limited information on the battlefield. As the conflict continues to unfold, the international community remains vigilant, monitoring the situation closely.
