Security Guard Charged in Connection with Mbare Musika Blaze

A fire that devastated the Mbare Musika Retail Market last week, causing an estimated US$5 million in damages, was ignited by a small blaze lit negligently by a security guard across the road who was trying to keep warm.

Action Chakauya, 35, was remanded by the Mbare Magistrates Court on charges of negligently causing significant property damage. Chakauya, employed as a security guard at the nearby premises, started the fire near one of the market’s main entrances.

On the evening of the incident, while on duty, Chakauya lost control of the fire, which subsequently engulfed the entire market. Following police investigations, he was arrested and charged under Section 141 of the criminal code.

In response to the disaster, President Mnangagwa has declared the fire a state of disaster, with plans in place to upgrade the market and assist affected traders with restocking. Many traders have already begun to restock and are resuming sales after rebuilding their stalls.
