South African actor Setlhabi Taunyane, best known for his role as Bra Kop on Rhythm City, has shared his personal struggles with his marital and family dynamics.
In a candid interview on the King David Podcast, Taunyane revealed that his family did not approve of his relationship with his Zimbabwean wife, leading to a complicated 17-year marriage.
Taunyane expressed his determination to navigate the challenges, despite facing exclusion from family gatherings due to his wife being perceived as an “outsider.” He shared a recent incident where he was not invited to a cousin’s wedding, highlighting the ongoing struggles.
The actor acknowledged the impact of this exclusion, stating that it extends beyond family boundaries. He emphasized that his wife’s Zimbabwean heritage has contributed to the challenges they face, with some family members viewing her as a “lekwerekwere” (outsider).

Setlhabi Taunyane, also shared the story of how he met his wife, revealing that he had always wanted to marry a woman from Ghana or Zimbabwe due to his strong sense of black consciousness and Africanism. After being rejected by women from Jamaica and Ghana, he met his wife at a market where she was selling traditional food. He was immediately drawn to her and asked for her phone number, leading to a romantic connection.
Despite the challenges, Taunyane expressed his commitment to making their relationship work. He emphasized the importance of embracing diversity and overcoming toxic family dynamics.
