Seven CCC Youths Arrested for Assaulting Deputy Mayor Over Alleged Party Loyalty Dispute

Seven CCC youths were apprehended for assaulting Deputy Mayor Councillor John Manatsa, accusing him of aligning with the party’s contested interim secretary general, Sengezo Tshabangu.

The attack unfolded during a political gathering hosted at the residence of recalled Beitbridge West legislator Morgan Ncube, serving as the opposition party’s district headquarters, as reported by The Herald.

The arrested individuals, namely Anthony Shoko (28), Winston Mugudo (25), Aaron Makumbe (24), Miller Kuwe (31), Decent Dube (35), Forget Chirenda (35), and Cosmas Chimonyo (23), face charges of assault and theft, allegedly stealing R2,500 and US$1,800 from the victim during the altercation.

Appearing before Beitbridge resident magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba, the suspects were granted bail amounting to $300,000 pending trial. They were instructed to report to the police station weekly and refrain from tampering with State witnesses, among other conditions.

According to State representative Ronald Mugwagwa, the incident occurred on March 6 during a CCC meeting at the party’s premises. Shoko purportedly demanded Councillor Manatsa to vacate the premises, claiming his allegiance to the faction led by Tshabangu rather than former CCC leader Nelson Chamisa.

Subsequently, the accused forcibly removed Manatsa from his seat, dragged him outside, and subjected him to physical assault, resulting in back injuries and a swollen left arm for the victim.

Reportedly, the assailants confiscated Manatsa’s belongings, including his shoes, a small bag with money, and a cell phone. They allegedly rifled through the bag, took the cash, and discarded the items over the perimeter wall.

Following the incident, a police report led to the arrest of the accused individuals a few days later.
