A suspect linked to a mass shooting in New Brighton, Gqeberha, was fatally shot during an exchange of gunfire with Eastern Cape police on Wednesday.
The incident followed the discovery of five men who were found dead in a shack at the Chris Hani informal settlement on Tuesday night.
Police responded to reports of the shooting and arrived to find the victims with fatal gunshot wounds. The motive for the murders is currently under investigation.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli reported that on October 23, 2024, police received intelligence regarding a suspect connected to the shooting.
The suspect was located in a house on Tsewu Street in New Brighton. As police attempted to enter the premises, the armed man was reportedly about to open fire, prompting officers to return fire. He sustained upper body injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities seized a Glock firearm and ammunition during the encounter. An inquest has been initiated for further examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been disclosed as police await formal identification.
