Six Officers Arrested for Allegedly Dividing Recovered US$22,000 Among Themselves

Three police officers were arrested on Tuesday, while three others are currently evading capture after allegedly dividing among themselves the US$22,000 they recovered during investigations.

The incident began when Cornellius Chimukange and Nesbert Kachungwe from JP Security found US$53,000 that had been dropped by armed robbers at Quest Financial Services in Belgravia, Harare. Subsequently, six police officers reportedly retrieved the money from the two security guards.

Chimukange and Kachungwe were apprehended and admitted to picking up the money and distributing it among themselves. They were sentenced to two years in prison each for theft. They disclosed that they had already purchased various items before being apprehended with the remaining US$22,000, with Mukangwe retaining US$15,000 and Kachungwe holding US$7,000.

During subsequent investigations, Detective Sergeant Since Asima (38) from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Traffic, Constable Perseverance Chisango (32) from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Southerton, and Constable Weston Muzoriwa (37) from ZRP Dombotombo allegedly shared the recovered money amongst themselves.

Asima, Chisango, and Muzoriwa have been arrested and are scheduled to appear in Harare Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
