Somizi Mhlongo Reflects on His Bold Journey of Self-Discovery and LGBTQ+ Advocacy

Somizi Mhlongo publicly came out about his sexuality in the mid-1990s, a courageous decision, especially considering his high-profile career at the time. Known for his bold personality, Mhlongo proudly embraced his identity as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, even when societal acceptance was still limited.

In a 2015 interview with Sunday World, Mhlongo discussed the challenges he faced in coming to terms with his sexuality. He expressed gratitude for his supportive family, who accepted him without question, saying, “My parents are a true example of unconditional love.”

He credited his family for their unwavering support, particularly when he was navigating the complexities of his identity. Reflecting on his experience, Mhlongo noted that his parents always knew about his sexuality, adding, “Trust me, your parents know from day one, they know from your behavior what your sexual preference is.”

Over the years, Mhlongo has been an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights in South Africa, using his platform to champion acceptance and self-expression. His personal life, including his highly publicized marriage to Mohale Motaung and their eventual breakup, has garnered significant media attention, with abuse allegations surfacing during their split.

Since then, Mhlongo has redefined his approach to relationships. In an interview with TshisaLIVE, he explained that while he has not yet found love again, he is currently exploring relationships without the expectation of commitment. “I am just mingling to mingle. I’m just having fun. There’s no love,” he shared.

“I’m not committed to anyone, and I don’t want anyone to commit to me,” Mhlongo said. He also stressed the importance of honesty in relationships, noting that being upfront and transparent about feelings is key. “An honest relationship means we have a conversation before anything happens, and we have to be in agreement,” he explained.

Despite his unconventional views on relationships, Mhlongo still envisions marriage as part of his future. However, he clarified that his perspective on marriage is non-traditional. “I’m more in love with the wedding than the marriage, but I understand the marriage part,” he said, emphasizing the importance of honesty and mutual understanding in any future commitments.
