Tyra Chante Naidoo, a Zimbabwe-born South African citizen, has filed a complaint with Zimbabwe’s immigration authorities over her treatment during a visit to the country.
Naidoo, who was born in Zimbabwe and holds both a Zimbabwean birth certificate and national identity card, has raised concerns about her treatment after her visitor’s permit expired on June 19, 2024. In a letter to the principal director of immigration, Naidoo, represented by Prisca Dube from Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), outlines her case.
Naidoo was born on June 15, 1996, in Harare at Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital. Her mother was a Zimbabwean citizen, and Naidoo holds a national identity card marked “CIT,” indicating she is a citizen by birth. Despite efforts by her parents to obtain a Zimbabwean passport for her as a child, they were unsuccessful. She later became a South African citizen on December 19, 2005.

Naidoo’s legal team argues that, as a Zimbabwean citizen by birth, she is entitled to immunity from deportation and the right to a Zimbabwean passport, in accordance with Section 66 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe. The letter further states that Naidoo will take legal action if she does not receive a response from the immigration authorities, and they may seek punitive costs if the matter goes to court.
