President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa has announced that the African National Congress (ANC) will work to form a national unity government.
According to Ramaphosa, this choice is in the country’s best interests and is in line with the electorate’s will.
Following protracted discussions in Johannesburg, the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) decided on this course of action during an extended meeting to plan the party’s post-election strategy.
The ANC is still the biggest party in the nation even if it has lost its parliamentary majority for the first time since the dawn of democracy.
Ramaphosa emphasized that inviting other political parties to form a unity government is the optimal path forward. “We agreed to invite political parties to form a government of national unity as the best option to move our country forward,” he stated.
The primary goal of this unity government, as outlined by Ramaphosa, would be to address critical issues such as crime, poverty, the high cost of living, and corruption.
He stressed the need for broad unity among South Africans to tackle these challenges effectively.
Ramaphosa also highlighted the importance of cooperation across various sectors.
“This moment also calls for multiparty cooperation and multi-stakeholder collaboration if we are to overcome the severe challenges that confront our country,” he said.
He acknowledged the frustration expressed by voters during the May 29 election, indicating that the ANC is committed to listening to the public’s concerns.
The recent election results reflect public dissatisfaction with the ANC’s performance, despite the party retaining its position as the largest party.

The ANC will occupy 159 of the 400 seats in the new National Assembly, a significant drop from its previous 230 seats in 2019.
South Africa faces numerous economic and social challenges, including slow economic growth, high poverty and unemployment rates, persistent racial inequality, severe power shortages, and pervasive political corruption. The current political landscape requires careful and strategic planning, as noted by ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, who remarked, “This is a time for sober minds. We’re looking at all options.”
The ANC’s decision to pursue a national unity government reflects its commitment to address the pressing issues facing South Africa.
By inviting other political parties to collaborate, the ANC aims to harness the collective wisdom and expertise of various stakeholders to overcome the country’s challenges and promote a more inclusive and prosperous future.
