The Zimbabwean arts community is shocked and saddened to learn about Susan Chenjerai‘s death. She was beloved for her famous role as Mai Rwizi in the acclaimed hilarious drama series “Mhuri yaVaMukadota.”
Chenjerai left a legacy of excellent acting and singing that captivated and pleased audiences for decades. Chenjerai’s daughter, Maylene, announced her mother’s passing.
Susan Chenjerai, born in the mid-1940s, grew up in Mbare and began her artistic journey in the 1950s. She joined Safirio Madzikatire’s band, the Safe Brothers, in 1969 and later became a household name with her portrayal of Mai Rwizi.
The character of Mai Rwizi, Mukadota’s on-screen wife (a part played by Madzikatire) resonated with many, making Chenjerai a beloved figure in Zimbabwean television and theatre.
She also worked alongside famous figures such as Oliver Mtukudzi and Jordan Chataika during her vibrant career. Despite her accomplishments, Chenjerai’s journey was not easy. She regularly mentioned how her acting career paid so little that she had to hunt for alternative employment to support her family.
In the 1980s, she discovered a new purpose and became a pastor, dedicating her life to preaching and planting churches in Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
The spiritual guidance and artistic contribution of Susan Chenjerai have had a lasting impact on Zimbabwean culture. Her reputation as a trailblazing actress and devoted preacher will be honoured even as the country grieves her passing.
