A Zimbabwean man, previously residing in South Africa, has been apprehended after fleeing the country following the cold-blooded murder of his girlfriend on Christmas Day over a text message.
Tendai Kugotsi, the suspect, was arrested in Chitungwiza and appeared in court recently. Allegedly, Kugotsi and his girlfriend, Maivenia Mudenda, were residing together in Sasolburg, South Africa, with their lobola plans underway.
The fatal altercation occurred on Christmas Day when Mudenda received a text message from a former workmate professing love. An argument ensued, during which Kugotsi allegedly stabbed Mudenda with a kitchen knife and subsequently strangled her.
After spending the night with the corpse, Kugotsi fled to Zimbabwe the next day, seeking refuge in Chitungwiza. However, detectives from CID Homicide received a tip-off regarding his whereabouts, leading to his arrest.
Appearing before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi, Kugotsi was remanded in custody until February 20 pending further investigations.
In a separate case, Simon Manhango, 33, also appeared in court charged with murder. The incident involved an altercation between Manhango and Regis Mbayago at a shebeen in Mbare on December 26. Following the dispute, Manhango allegedly stabbed Mbayago under his right arm and fled the scene.
Despite efforts by bystanders, including Vimbai Makaita Sibanda, to stop the bleeding, Mbayago succumbed to his injuries. Manhango was likewise remanded in custody until February 20, with Rufaro Chonzi representing the State in both cases.
