Robert Mutasa, a 44-year-old manager at Telecel Zimbabwe based in the Bradfield suburb of Bulawayo, is facing legal action for allegedly misusing his position to steal generators and essential equipment valued at approximately $145,000.
Reports indicate that Mutasa was suspended from his role pending an investigation and was arrested last week. He appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Joseph Mabeza and was remanded for a bail hearing the following day.
Prosecutor Dominic Moyo stated that Mutasa allegedly pilfered power-generating equipment from January of the previous year until his arrest. So far, only $65,000 worth of equipment has been recovered. The alleged thefts took place across various suburbs, including Nketa, Makokoba, and Northend, where he reportedly informed security personnel that he was taking the equipment for routine servicing.

This case raises serious concerns about potential internal corruption and misconduct within Telecel Zimbabwe, a company that has been facing financial difficulties and exploring options for corporate rescue.
Moyo noted that a colleague witnessed Mutasa stealing some equipment, which led to the recovery of 13 generators that he had sold.
The prosecutor argued against bail, citing Mutasa’s valid passport and financial means as reasons he might flee. He expressed concerns that Mutasa could interfere with ongoing investigations and witness testimonies, particularly since some witnesses reside in Hwange and Victoria Falls. Moyo warned that granting bail could hinder the recovery of stolen items and allow Mutasa to commit further offenses, especially given his suspension from work.
