The HALO Trust, renowned for its global impact in landmine clearance, relies on a fleet of vehicles and machinery crucial for its operations. At the heart of maintaining and managing this fleet lies the Head Mechanic, a position vital for overseeing maintenance and repair activities. Let’s delve into the responsibilities, qualifications, and significance of this role within HALO’s operations.

Duties and Responsibilities: The Head Mechanic serves as the linchpin for HALO’s mechanical operations. Tasked with managing a team of mechanics, their duties encompass a broad spectrum of responsibilities:

Mechanic Management:

  • Leading and guiding mechanics to ensure adherence to job standards and priorities.
  • Conducting workshops to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Planning and managing mechanics’ work both at headquarters and in the field.
  • Ensuring seamless operation even during mechanic leave or emergencies.

Vehicle Repair and Maintenance:

  • Conducting thorough inspections, servicing, and repairs of all vehicles and machinery.
  • Implementing strict maintenance schedules to minimize downtime and ensure operational efficiency.
  • Prioritizing safety critical repairs and overseeing all major vehicle assessments.

Workshop Maintenance:

  • Maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient workshop environment.
  • Conducting regular audits and serviceability checks of tools and equipment.
  • Liaising with external suppliers for outsourcing work when necessary.

Stores, Purchasing, and Supplier Liaison:

  • Leading assessments of new vehicles before purchase.
  • Assessing supplier technical ability and maintaining relationships.
  • Ensuring proper labeling and storage of removed parts during repairs.

Training:

  • Providing ongoing training to mechanics, drivers, and operators regarding maintenance and care.

Qualifications and Experience: The Head Mechanic must possess a blend of technical expertise, managerial skills, and a commitment to HALO’s mission. Key qualifications and experiences include:

  • A decade of workshop experience with substantial time in a leadership role.
  • Demonstrated work ethics and the ability to manage a team effectively.
  • Technical qualifications and familiarity with automotive standards and practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and an understanding of safety protocols.
