Trump to Be Sentenced in Hush-Money Case, No Jail Time Expected

Republican Party

TrutA New York judge has scheduled Donald Trump’s sentencing in his hush-money case for January 10, just days before his expected inauguration as president.

Justice Juan Merchan has indicated that Trump will not face jail time, probation, or a fine, opting instead for an “unconditional discharge.” In his ruling, the judge stated that Trump could attend the hearing either in person or virtually.

Trump had sought to have the case dismissed following his presidential election victory, arguing it was a politically motivated attack. He later criticized the judge’s decision on social media, calling the case a “rigged charade” and describing the sentencing order as an “illegitimate political attack.”

The case stems from Trump’s conviction in May on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. The charges are linked to a $130,000 payment to adult-film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election, allegedly to silence claims of an affair. The funds were reportedly reimbursed through Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen. Trump has denied all allegations, pleaded not guilty, and argued that the case was designed to undermine his 2024 campaign.

On his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed the judge’s decision violated constitutional principles and could jeopardize the presidency. His spokesperson, Steven Cheung, dismissed the case as part of a “witch hunt” and insisted that Trump should be allowed to carry out his presidential transition without interference.

In a recent motion, Trump argued the case would hinder his ability to govern effectively. Justice Merchan, however, stated that alternative measures could address Trump’s concerns without overturning the jury’s verdict.
