Urgent Call for Global Action as Israel puts Palestinian Health Sector Under Siege

Palestinian Ambassador Decries Israeli Strikes on Civil Defense Amid Mounting Gaza Casualties

Dr Tamer Almassri

The ongoing crisis in Gaza has taken a devastating toll on its already fragile healthcare system. The latest assault on Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza has drawn widespread condemnation, particularly from the Ambassador of the State of Palestine, Dr. Tamer Almassri. In a strong statement, Dr. Almassri denounced the Israeli occupation for its continued attacks on medical facilities, healthcare workers, and civilians, describing these actions as systematic violations of international humanitarian law.

The assault on Kamal Adwan Hospital has left five healthcare workers dead, ambulances destroyed, and the facility in ruins. The arrest and alleged torture of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiyya, the hospital director, alongside 350 other staff and patients, mark a grim escalation in targeting Gaza’s health infrastructure. These acts, Dr. Almassri emphasized, constitute war crimes under the Geneva Conventions, as hospitals and medical personnel are afforded protection during conflicts.

The broader implications of these attacks are deeply troubling. Over the past year, Israeli forces have detained more than 600 healthcare workers and killed approximately 1,060, with some reportedly tortured in custody. Hundreds of others have been injured. This staggering loss of life and expertise has crippled Gaza’s healthcare system, leaving civilians with limited access to essential medical services.

Dr. Almassri underscored the silence of the international community as a critical enabler of these atrocities. He called for urgent action to hold Israel accountable for what he described as ethnic cleansing and systematic aggression. “The international community must assume its legal and moral responsibilities,” he stated, urging the UN Security Council to take decisive measures to end these violations and ensure accountability.

The State of Palestine is demanding the immediate release of detained healthcare workers and an end to the targeting of medical institutions. Beyond the loss of life, these attacks pose a severe threat to regional and global stability. The destruction of Gaza’s health infrastructure not only constitutes a blatant assault on human rights but also undermines peace and security in the region.

As Gaza’s health sector teeters on the brink of collapse, the global community faces a critical test. Will it stand by and allow these violations to continue, or will it act to uphold the principles of international law and humanity? The answer may determine the future of healthcare access and human rights in one of the world’s most beleaguered regions.
