US$5 Robbery Leads to Car Accident: Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Theft

Blessing Moyo has been handed a 20-year prison sentence for his involvement in a robbery where he stole US$5 from a motorist, subsequently leading to a car accident.

Appearing before Harare Magistrate Letwin Rwodzi, Moyo faced charges of armed robbery, resulting in a 20-year sentence with six years suspended conditionally, culminating in a net jail term of 14 years.

The prosecution, led by Mrs. Cecilia Mashingaidze, outlined how Moyo and an unidentified accomplice hitched a ride with Mr. King Kamungeremu from Chitungwiza to Harare City center.

Blessing Moyo appeared before Harare Magistrate Letwin Rwodzi, facing two counts of armed robbery. Initially, he received a 20-year sentence with six years suspended conditionally, resulting in an effective 14-year jail term.

According to the prosecution led by Mrs. Cecilia Mashingaidze, Moyo, along with an accomplice who remains at large, hitched a ride with Mr. King Kamungeremu from Chitungwiza to Harare City center

During the journey, Moyo’s accomplice, positioned in the front seat, brandished a firearm, coercing Mr. Kamungeremu into surrendering his wallet containing US$5.

Ordered to drive towards Kabrit Zimbabwe National Army main camp, Mr. Kamungeremu attempted to escape by swerving into oncoming traffic, resulting in a collision with another vehicle.

After the crash, Mr. Kamungeremu sought assistance, prompting the accomplice to flee, while Moyo remained trapped in the vehicle.

Good Samaritan motorists helped Mr. Kamungeremu detain Moyo until the police arrived. Upon searching the scene, authorities recovered a pellet gun used in the robbery.
