A woman from the outskirts of Lusaka, Peggy Changwe, 33, has shared her troubling experience in a marriage that turned oppressive. In a shocking revelation during a recent court hearing, Changwe explained how her husband, Peter Banda, 41, has enforced strict control over her personal grooming, insisting she grow her pubic hair long enough to braid it.
Changwe recounted that for over a year, she has been unable to shave due to her husband’s accusations of infidelity. “Whenever he comes home from being with his girlfriends, he demands to inspect me,” she said. “If my hair is short, he accuses me of cheating. He expects it to be long enough to braid.”
Frustrated and desperate for change, Changwe decided to take her case to court in hopes of gaining some freedom from her husband’s control and to end their marriage after 17 years.

She described Banda as a bricklayer known for his troubled relationships, claiming he has a pattern of breaking up other people’s marriages. Changwe also shared a disturbing incident where Banda attempted to harm her and their children while with his girlfriend, an event that nearly cost her her eyesight.
In court, Changwe explained that Banda’s behavior has impacted her health and well-being, as he does not allow her to groom herself without his permission. “I haven’t been able to shave since he left me over a year ago,” she stated, highlighting the control he continues to exert over her life.
Despite his strict rules, Changwe noted that Banda returns home with a well-groomed appearance, leaving her to deal with the consequences of his demands. She is now seeking a divorce to reclaim her independence and dignity. Peggy Changwe
