Zambia has taken a major diplomatic step by filing an official complaint against Zimbabwe with the African Union (AU) in response to the contentious remarks made by Zimbabwe’s President ED Mnangagwa two weeks ago in Russia.
The Zambian government has condemned the remarks as an obvious assault on their country’s sovereignty.
“Zambia has reported Zimbabwe to the AU after that country’s remarks in Russia two weeks ago, saying the remarks by Zimbabwe’s President ED are “an unwarranted attack on Zambia’s sovereignty.” Zimbabwe under ZANU PF has been a very toxic neighbor to our country,” said Joseph Kalimbwe, a Zambian politician through X.
Zambians have expressed their outrage and indignation over President ED’s comments made while on a visit to Russia. The Zambian government has referred to the comments as “unwarranted” and “toxic,” highlighting animosity between the two countries.
The increasing tensions between the two countries are demonstrated by Zambia’s determination to refer Zimbabwe to the AU. The action is interpreted as a request for the regional organization to step in and resolve the matter.
Stability in the region has been threatened by the tense relationship between Southern African Development Community (SADC) members Zimbabwe and Zambia. Because of its harsh language and alleged meddling in Zambia’s domestic affairs, the ruling party of Zimbabwe, ZANU PF, has been called a “toxic neighbor.”.
Tafadzwa Mugwadi, a member of parliament for the ZANU PF party, replied to Chalimbwe through the comment section, saying, “Why did you not report us to Africom?” . Yesterday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Zambia revealed that the government of Zambia is collaborating with the US through the newly established AFRICOM office in Lusaka on defense and security matters.
We eagerly anticipate the African Union’s answer to this grievance as it walks the fine line of regional diplomacy. The circumstances emphasize the necessity of diplomatic efforts and constructive communication to settle conflicts and preserve peace among member states.
There is still a lot of animosity between Zimbabwe and Zambia, and many people want this diplomatic impasse to end quickly.
