The local musicians are enduring long hours of work and this is not healthy, says prominent drummer and music manager Sam Mataure.
The 54-year-old music guru who has worked with the late Oliver Mutukudzi and Thomas Mapfumo among many other celebrated musicians was speaking on a local radio station on Tuesday.
“One thing I have realized is that our musicians here are overworked and it’s not healthy at all.
“I was speaking to a close friend who recently attended a Macheso show and said they partied until morning from midnight. To him that’s should be the norm but this should not be the case musicians have their own families to attend to.
“’ It is such a belief that has seen some people not comfortable in building up families with musicians because they will be rarely available as they entertain revelers up to the morning,” Mataure poured out.
“I think the normal working hours for a musician should be 2 hours. That’s the international standard,” added the Mutare-born music legend.
Mataure also worked with South African music greats Miriam Makeba ,Judith Sephuma and Thandiswa Mazwai.
The drummer who is on a recovery path after suffering a mild stroke, pleaded with singer and music promoter Clive Malunga to bring back the Jenaguru Music Festival.
“I have quite memorable moments playing at the packed Jenaguru Music Festival in Gwanzuru. If anyone can persuade him to bring back the festival.
“I have confidence in him as he has a wealth of experience as a music promoter,”added the affable musician.
Currently Mataure is the manager for Chimurenga exponent Thomas Mapfumo and says he will only go back to playing drums once he fully recovers.
