The government is intensifying efforts this festive season to tackle smuggling and the distribution of counterfeit goods, which pose serious risks to public health and the economy, according to Industry and Commerce Minister Mangaliso Ndlovu.
Ndlovu acknowledged that the problem of illegally imported products, including items such as baby formula, detergents, and other harmful substances, has been persistent. However, the government is now implementing strict measures to protect consumers and bolster the local manufacturing sector.
To address the issue, personnel have been deployed at key border points and marketplaces to intercept smuggled and counterfeit goods. Ndlovu emphasized that the government is determined to prevent these products from entering the market, especially during the holiday season.
“We are committed to preventing the entry of counterfeit goods this December,” Ndlovu stated, adding, “We are waging a war on counterfeit products and strengthening our institutions to tackle this issue effectively.”

The rising presence of smuggled goods is largely driven by porous borders and the demand for cheaper alternatives. Areas like Mbare and downtown Harare have been identified as hotspots where fraudulent traders often repackage substandard goods to deceive consumers.
