The Africa Risk Capacity (ARC), an agency of the African Union, has provided Zimbabwe with US$32 million to mitigate the effects of the El Nino-induced drought, Business Times reports.

The funds are expected to benefit at least 508,500 households across 27 districts in the country.

The Government of Zimbabwe received US$16.8 million, while the World Food Programme and Start Network were allocated US$6.1 million and US$8.9 million, respectively.

During the Africa Risk Capacity Drought Insurance payout ceremony held in Harare on Thursday, Minister of Finance, Economic Development, and Investment Promotion, Professor Mthuli Ncube, highlighted the significance of the event in Zimbabwe’s efforts to combat the adverse effects of drought.

“Approximately 508,500 people are targeted for this payout,” stated Professor Ncube.

He further emphasized the government’s goal to expand the program in the coming years to cover households in every district, aiming for nationwide coverage rather than just half the districts.
