Zimbabwe Struggles to Meet Social and Economic Rights Amidst Economic Challenges

Zimbabwe faces substantial challenges in addressing the social and economic rights of its citizens. This is reflected in several indicators, including GNP per capita, labor productivity, social development indices, and the Social Progress Index.

As of 2024, Zimbabwe’s GNP per capita remains relatively low compared to regional standards, signifying limited resources for individuals. The Social Development Index reveals shortcomings in areas such as healthcare, education, and living standards, all of which are essential for securing social rights.

According to Article 22 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), every person, as part of society, has the right to social security and should be able to access the economic, social, and cultural rights necessary for their dignity and free development. Likewise, Article 22 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Banjul Charter) affirms the right of all people to economic, social, and cultural development, respecting their freedom, identity, and equal participation in the shared heritage of humanity.

Labor productivity in Zimbabwe has been adversely affected by economic instability, insufficient infrastructure, and lack of investment in human capital, all of which exacerbate poverty. The Social Progress Index further highlights challenges in areas such as personal rights, basic knowledge, and environmental sustainability.

Together, these indicators show that Zimbabwe is struggling to meet its obligations to provide adequate social and economic rights for its citizens.

The notion of social and economic well-being as a human right is based on progressive realization, which asserts that governments must work towards improving the living conditions of their people over time. This requires embedding social value into policies and creating an environment where individuals can flourish socially and economically.

Social protection systems play a vital role in this context by offering safety nets to vulnerable populations, especially during crises or periods of change. These systems not only help reduce poverty but also enhance resilience and empowerment, reaffirming that access to basic needs like food, healthcare, education, and housing is essential for human dignity.

Recognizing social and economic well-being as a human right highlights the responsibility of governments and societies to build inclusive frameworks that help individuals reach their full potential.

To ensure social and economic well-being as a human right in Zimbabwe, a collaborative effort is necessary from the government, the private sector, international organizations, and civil society. The government should prioritize laws that guarantee fair access to essential services such as housing, healthcare, and education. This can be achieved by increasing funding for these sectors and ensuring that resources are distributed equitably across all regions.

Economic opportunities must be expanded by promoting job creation. Lowering bureaucratic barriers and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will help stimulate entrepreneurship. International organizations can also support development by providing financial assistance and technical expertise aimed at improving infrastructure and productivity.

Additionally, strengthening legal frameworks to protect human rights is essential. This includes incorporating international treaties related to social and economic rights into national law and ensuring their ratification.

It is vital for people to understand that they are entitled to social and economic well-being, and the government must play a key role in ensuring that these rights are not undermined by policies or laws that do not uphold fundamental human rights.
