Zimbabwe to Use Breathalysers in Crackdown on Drunk Driving

Zimbabwean Police are intensifying their efforts to combat drunk driving by introducing breathalysers at police roadblocks.

Felix Mhona, the country’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, confirmed that the devices are being acquired and are expected to be in use by the upcoming Easter holiday.

The new initiative aims to target irresponsible drivers, especially those who drink and drive during busy festive periods.

Drunk driving and speeding remain leading causes of road accidents and fatalities in Zimbabwe, but enforcing laws against them has proven difficult.

Previously, while police suspected certain drivers were intoxicated, they lacked the tools to confirm it. With the introduction of breathalysers, officers will be able to conduct alcohol tests routinely, ensuring that only sober individuals are behind the wheel.

The police will focus on testing drivers on major highways, where the risk of fatal accidents is higher due to speeding. Reports indicate that even bus drivers have been suspected of driving under the influence.

Unlike speed traps, where drivers may reduce their speed before reaching a checkpoint, alcohol remains in the bloodstream, making detection unavoidable.

While challenges over the accuracy of breathalysers may arise, the devices are known for their reliability. If needed, additional blood tests will be conducted.

Zimbabwean law already mandates a one-year licence suspension for first-time offenders who exceed the legal alcohol limit of 70mg per 100 ml of blood.

The government continues to upgrade roads, which may encourage faster driving; authorities emphasise that strict enforcement is essential.

In addition, the government is exploring the possibility of periodic testing to ensure drivers remain aware of road safety regulations.

As Easter draws near, motorists are urged to reconsider driving under the influence; getting caught could result in the loss of their licence for a year.
