The University of Zimbabwe Diamond Centre recently unveiled Sophia, the world’s first robot to be granted citizenship, and a groundbreaking innovation in robotics.
With remarkable human-like features, Sophia is equipped with advanced language skills, movement capabilities, and navigation systems powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and computer vision.
Developed by Hanson Robotics, this robot with female characteristics was presented at the Zimbabwe AI and Innovation Week, an event supported by the UNDP to foster AI development in Zimbabwe. The country is actively leveraging AI to drive social and economic progress.

Katherine Yeung, Operations Director at Hanson Robotics, introduced Sophia to an enthusiastic crowd at the University of Zimbabwe, where she was affectionately referred to as “VaChihera”.
The event was part of the week-long celebration, which focused on the theme: “Reimagining the Future: AI and Innovation for Sustainable Development in Zimbabwe.”
Sophia was first created eight years ago by Hanson Robotics, and its showcase marks a significant moment in Zimbabwe’s growing AI landscape.
