Kerry-Ann Ratidzo Moyo, a Zimbabwean student, enthralled the audience as the University of Richmond’s 2024 commencement speaker. Held yesterday at the university’s Robins Center, the ceremony honoured the diverse and accomplished graduates’ accomplishments.
Moyo, who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in communications studies and a minor in data science and statistics, touched both the audience and her fellow graduates with her moving and motivational speech. In her speech, she emphasized the value of tenacity, cultural diversity, and knowledge acquisition.
In her reflections on her academic and personal experiences, Moyo highlighted the need of adaptability and resilience in the face of adversity. “This has not been an easy journey, but it has been a worthwhile one,” she remarked.

“We have learned to navigate new environments, embrace different perspectives, and leverage our unique backgrounds to contribute meaningfully to the world.”
The importance of Moyo’s Zimbabwean ancestry and the support she received from her family and community back home were also discussed in her address. She said, amid acclaim from the crowd, “Being here today is a testament to the strength and encouragement of those who believed in me from thousands of miles away.”
Moyo’s academic accomplishments and her leadership position among students were acknowledged by university officials. Her commitment to the university and her services to the community were acknowledged by Dr. Ronald A. Crutcher, President of the University of Richmond.
According to Dr. Crutcher, “Kerry-Ann embodies the values we work to inculcate in our students: intellectual curiosity, a dedication to service, and the capacity to inspire others.”
Moyo has achieved success outside of the classroom. She participated actively in many campus groups and events while attending the University of Richmond, such as the Data Science Club and the International Students Association.
Her multidisciplinary approach to learning, which integrated statistics, data science, rhetoric, and communications, has equipped her for a bright future in a society that is becoming more and more data-driven.
Moyo is optimistic and resolute as she gets ready to start the next phase of her life. “We now have the tools thanks to our education to make a difference,” she said as she wrapped up her remarks.
“Let us move forward with bravery and conviction, prepared to meet today’s challenges and build a better world for all.”
