Zimbabwe’s Tafadzwa Chikoto Elected First Black Mayor in Corby, UK

Zimbabwean politician Tafadzwa Chikoto made history by becoming the first Black mayor of Corby Town Council in the United Kingdom.

His election, which took place three years ago, marked a significant milestone in the town’s leadership.

Known to many as Taffy, Cllr. Chikoto first served as deputy mayor in 2021, making him Corby’s first Black deputy mayor.

Reflecting on his achievement, he expressed his deep connection to the community, stating, “I feel native to Corby.

Having lived here for as long as I have, I would not trade it for anything. It’s an honour to be elected mayor in a foreign land and to represent the community.”

He acknowledged the progress symbolised by his election, emphasising inclusivity and change. “It means a lot to be the first Black mayor of Corby. People are moving forward, and times are changing, which is great. This is exciting for the community, as everyone can feel included,” he remarked.

Before taking on the role of mayor, Cllr. Chikoto was deputy mayor in 2021, following Cllr. Lawrence Ferguson’s tenure as mayor. At the time, Corby’s deputy mayor, Cllr Buckingham, highlighted the significance of the moment, saying, “This is a great year for diversity.

He served on the town council for a year before stepping into the deputy mayor role. His interest in politics stemmed from his desire to support young people, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds.

“I want to give young people purpose and create opportunities for them,” he said, underscoring his dedication to youth empowerment.

His chosen charity, Lakelands Hospice, provides palliative and end-of-life care free of charge to residents in Corby and nearby villages. “They do amazing work, and I want to contribute in a meaningful way,” he added.

Cllr Mark Pengelly, a fellow Corby councillor, commended Chikoto’s election, stating, “Corby was built on immigrants, so I’m incredibly proud to have Taffy as our new mayor. I’ve known him for years, and I believe he will make Corby proud.”

During his campaign, Cllr. Chikoto positioned himself as a “red-collar mayor,” aiming to connect with the city’s working-class residents while fostering collaboration with the business sector.
