Themba Zwane, the talisman of Mamelodi Sundowns, will lead Bafana Bafana against South Sudan and Uganda in the forthcoming Afcon Qualifiers.
Vice captain Percy Tau has been left off of this team, and regular captain Ronwen Williams is now out of the lineup due to a shoulder injury.
The South African Football Association (Safa) announced on Monday that Zwane had been selected by coach Broos to captain the team in the pivotal qualifiers.
In two 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan, “Themba Zwane will captain the Bafana Bafana team,” Safa announced in a statement.
“Coach Hugo Broos made the announcement to the team after dinner on Tuesday night and the mercurial player will lead the South African senior national side.

“ Against Uganda at home at Orlando Stadium on Friday, September 6(6pm) and away against South Sudan in their second Afcon qualifier on Tuesday, September 10 2024.” SAFA said.
Having played in 46 matches for his country, 36-year-old Zwane was a vital member of Bafana’s squad that won bronze at the 2023 Afcon.
“Mshishi” is considered by many as one of the best players South Africa has ever produced and has been an essential part of the Sundowns team that has dominated the league in recent years.
Before the Afcon in Ivory Coast this year, Broos again complimented Zwane, saying he was the best player he had ever coached.
