Overview: The Australian Government’s Research Training Program (RTP) allocates block grants to higher education providers (HEPs) to facilitate research-focused postgraduate studies. This program supports both domestic and international students pursuing Research Doctorate and Research Masters degrees, commonly referred to as higher degrees by research (HDRs).

Under the RTP, participating universities offer one or more of the following types of support to RTP Scholarship recipients:
- RTP Fees Offset: Covers the tuition fees for a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) student that would otherwise have been paid by the student. This offsets the full tuition fee applicable to the student’s program. This is not a stipend.
- RTP Stipend: Provides financial assistance to students for their living expenses while pursuing a Higher Degree by Research.
- RTP Allowances: Assists students with additional costs associated with their Higher Degree by Research, such as relocation expenses, thesis printing, academic publication costs, and health cover for recipients and their dependents.
RTP scholarships are available for a maximum of two years for a research master’s degree or a minimum of three years, up to a maximum of four years (at the discretion of the Higher Education Provider) for a research doctorate degree.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for an RTP Stipend, RTP Fees Offset, or RTP Allowance, students must be enrolled as domestic or international students in an accredited HDR course of study at an Australian Higher Education Provider (HEP). Basic eligibility criteria are outlined in Section 1.5 of the Commonwealth Scholarships Guidelines (Research) 2017.
