Following her success as a finalist for Miss South Africa, 23-year-old Chidimma Adetshina, a law student, was met with a barrage of xenophobic backlash. Adetshina, whose mother is from South Africa and whose father is from Nigeria, was the subject of hateful remarks on social media. Notwithstanding the fact that she was raised in Cape Town and was born in Soweto, some questioned her eligibility to represent South Africa.
“We, the South African people, have no idea who she is or what her name is! One commenter on X expressed a common sentiment among “go-home” messages on the internet, saying, “She better start packing and go home.” Prior to her removal, a petition with over 14,000 signatures called for her elimination from the competition.
South Africa’s Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie, known for his views on immigration, stated of X, “We really cannot have Nigerians compete in our Miss SA competition.” Before I comment, I’d like to know all the details, but it already appears strange.”
Adetshina is not isolated in her experiences. Last year, Melissa Nayimuli, a former Miss South Africa contestant whose father is from Uganda, faced similar hatred. Speaking in her native Xhosa, Nayimuli described how she had to repeatedly demonstrate her South African identity in order to overcome xenophobia.
Dr. Nombulelo Shange of the University of the Free State blames South Africa’s apartheid past for the animosity that has resulted in ingrained prejudices. After apartheid was abolished in 1994, South Africa welcomed African immigrants; however, economic hardships have exacerbated hostility toward foreigners, who are frequently viewed as competitors for limited resources.
Adetshina remains unflappable in the face of criticism. She acknowledged the lack of support from some fellow South Africans, but she remained determined to represent her country.
The world is watching closely as the Miss South Africa final approaches, hoping that a message of unity will emerge amid the hatred.
