Aspiring filmmakers across Africa are being given an exciting opportunity to launch their careers through the 2025 MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) programme. This prestigious initiative aims to equip 60 newcomers with the skills and experience needed to thrive in the continent’s rapidly expanding film and television industry.
Charity Njanji, Head of Corporate Affairs and Public Relations at MultiChoice Zimbabwe, highlighted the impact of the MTF programme, describing it as one of the continent’s most successful training initiatives. Since its launch six years ago, the programme has produced a large number of work-ready graduates who are already making waves in the industry.
“We are pleased that in each of the annual MTF academic years, we have had two Zimbabwean students among the trainees, and we look forward to a continued strong showing from aspiring filmmakers from this country in this valuable programme,” said Njanji.
The MTF programme is hosted at three academies across Africa—Lusaka for Southern Africa, Nairobi for East Africa, and Lagos for West Africa. Each academy hosts 20 students for a year, during which they are exposed to a comprehensive curriculum covering both theoretical and practical aspects of filmmaking. From cinematography and sound design to editing and scriptwriting, participants receive hands-on training and mentorship from industry experts.

Njanji emphasized the broad appeal of the programme, noting that it welcomes applicants from various backgrounds and experiences. “Whether you’re a young professional looking to change careers or a newcomer eager to make your mark in the television and film industry, the MTF offers a unique opportunity to realise your potential and build a strong foundation of talent and skills across the continent,” she said.
Graduates of the MTF programme receive accredited and recognised qualifications, along with opportunities to work on major productions and further their training with global partners like the New York Film Academy and India’s Zee World. Additionally, top-performing students can produce and direct short films that are showcased on MultiChoice platforms.
The success of MTF alumni speaks volumes about the programme’s effectiveness. Last year, five graduates received nominations across three categories at the 2023 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards. Many former students now hold significant roles in the industry, working as directors, producers, sound designers, and more on major African productions. One standout alumnus, Habtamu Mekonen from the East African academy, even won an Emmy Award for a short film he produced and directed.
“Perhaps the success of MTF is best illustrated by the feature films produced by its students,” Njanji said. “The films highlight the talents and creativity of participants and demonstrate the programme’s profound impact.”
The MTF also fosters an entrepreneurial spirit, empowering graduates to start their own projects and businesses. To date, 30 graduates have established production houses, creating employment opportunities and contributing to the economy. The programme’s emphasis on entrepreneurship enables graduates to become catalysts for economic growth and cultural enrichment in their communities.
Applications for the 2025 MTF Class are now open, with the deadline set for September 15. Interested candidates can apply and learn more about the programme’s requirements at MultiChoice Talent Factory Application Portal.
“We encourage all serious Zimbabwean aspirants to apply and stand a chance of being part of this incredible experience,” urged Njanji.
As the MTF continues to shape the future of African cinema, it remains a vital platform for discovering and nurturing the continent’s next generation of filmmakers.
