The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) has undergone a significant transformation, led by Executive Director Napoleon Nyanhi, to enhance the digital presence of local artists and align with international standards.
The revamped NACZ website, launched on September 1, boasts a modern and user-friendly design, making it easier for creatives to access industry opportunities, grants, festivals, and exhibitions.
Nyanhi emphasized the importance of embracing digital platforms, citing the dominance of social media in the digital space. He encouraged local artists to develop a strong online presence, monetize digital channels, and utilize online stores for marketing and selling their craft.
This approach enables artists to transcend geographical boundaries and reach a broader audience.
The website revamp, NACZ has also introduced changes to the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA), Zimbabwe’s premier awards recognizing outstanding achievements in arts and culture. The updates aim to enhance efficiency, transparency, and fairness in the adjudication process and award categories.

These changes resulted from a nationwide consultation process conducted by the NACZ board in 2022, which sought feedback from the arts sector on the effectiveness of the awards.
Key changes to NAMA include the addition of seven new awards and the renaming of existing ones. The updated awards categories and adjudication process reflect the valuable feedback obtained from stakeholders during the consultation process. Nyanhi highlighted the significance of these changes, stating that they demonstrate NACZ’s commitment to listening to the arts sector and making necessary adjustments to promote excellence and inclusivity.
NACZ plans to make its website an integrated one-stop-shop where creatives can register for licenses and permits without physically visiting their offices. This development aligns with the organization’s goal of enhancing convenience and accessibility for local artists.
NACZ’s revamp and digital transformation initiatives aim to empower local artists to compete on an international level, capitalize on digital opportunities, and showcase their talents to a broader audience. By embracing digital platforms and refining its awards and processes, National Arts Council of Zimbabwe “NACZ” is poised to play a vital role in promoting Zimbabwe’s vibrant arts and culture sector.
