Taxi Theft Leads to Seven-Year Jail Term for Harare Man

Prosper Moyo of Harare has been sentenced to an effective seven years in jail for the theft of a taxi, resulting in the dismissal of the taxi driver. Harare regional magistrate Mr Themba Kuwanda delivered the verdict, condemning Moyo’s callous actions and emphasizing the need for accountability.

Initially facing a 10-year sentence, with three years suspended on condition of good behavior, Moyo was found guilty of hiring a taxi driven by Tawanda Zinyenge (51) on September 2 last year. Upon reaching their supposed destination in Ardbennie, Moyo lured Zinyenge away from the vehicle under the pretense of retrieving bags.

However, Moyo then assaulted Zinyenge, stole the car keys and $20, and fled with the taxi. Despite the theft, Zinyenge’s friend Samson Kambara spotted the stolen vehicle later that day and alerted the authorities. Police, with the help of a stolen cellphone’s tracking, apprehended Moyo with $4,580 of the stolen amount recovered.

Magistrate Kuwanda denounced Moyo’s disregard for others’ property and well-being, asserting the importance of upholding public safety and confidence in government mandates. Moyo’s sentencing serves as a stern warning against such criminal behavior.

In another story, Four women from Hatcliffe suburb in Harare were handed nine-month jail terms after assaulting and publicly undressing a woman they suspected of having an affair with a colleague’s husband.

Initially, Harare magistrate Mr. Gamuchirai Gore had sentenced Zelpa Kanduza, Natasha Kanduza, Fortunate Tembo, and Olleyn Vinyungwi to 12 months behind bars. However, three months of the sentence were suspended on the condition of good behavior.
