Zimbabwean hip-hop star Takura Shonai has bravely opened up about his eight-year struggle with drug and substance abuse, which nearly destroyed his music career and personal life.

Despite achieving national stardom with hits like “MaObama,” “Wandachuza,” and “Zino Irema,” Takura’s success was marred by the pressures of fame, broken relationships, and addiction.

Takura’s rise to fame was swift, with his Extended Play “Stripped” captivating fans and solidifying his position as one of Zimbabwe’s top hip-hop artists. However, behind the scenes, he was battling addiction, depression, and personal losses. His music began to suffer, and recent releases have failed to match the quality of his earlier work.

In a candid interview, Takura attributed his downfall to drug and substance abuse, stating, “Drugs never contributed to my rise. Instead, I lost everything to drugs. Every single thing in my life.” He revealed how addiction consumed his life, causing him to postpone important commitments and lose loved ones, friends, and opportunities.

Fortunately, Takura’s manager, Mike Rich, intervened and checked him into a rehabilitation center. Takura Shonai credits Mike with saving his life, saying, “If Mike had not looked out for me, I’m sure I would have been dead by now.”

During rehabilitation, Takura learned valuable lessons about socializing, vulnerability, and seeking help. He dispelled common misconceptions about depression and therapy, emphasizing that these issues affect everyone, regardless of race or background. “Some people still think that depression and therapy sessions are meant for white people. This mentality is causing the death of so many people,” he said.

Takura’s journey to recovery has been challenging, but he’s determined to regain his musical momentum. He acknowledged that his recent releases haven’t been up to par but is working to rediscover his creative spark.

The singer’s story serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of addiction and the importance of seeking help. Takura’s bravery in sharing his struggles aims to raise awareness and encourage others to prioritize their mental health.
