Alick Macheso

Alick Macheso is a best Zimbabwean musician known for his mastery of the Sungura music genre.

Macheso was born in 1968 in Shamva, 90 kilometers north of Harare, to parents of Malawian origin a fact that inspired him to be able to speak and sing in five languages – Shona, Chichewa, Sena, Venda and Lingala.

He gained recognition for his exceptional guitar skills and melodious voice a rare combination of skills among musicians.

In the early 1997, Macheso formed his own band called Orchestra Mberikwazvo. He came onto the music scene as a solo artist in 1998, with his debut album Magariro, which carried “Pakutema Munda “, probably the least noticeable from that album.

From the first album he received recognition from fans, he did the album Vakiridzo the following year. His third album was Simbaradzo which made waves across Zimbabwe. Simbaradzo was and still is the best selling album of all time in Zimbabwe with hits like Mundikumbuke and Amai VaRubhi.

His next album Simbaradzo was also a hit followed by Zvakanaka Zvakadaro in 2003 and Zvido Zvenyu Kunyanya.

In 2011 he initiated the popular Zora Butter dance which has come to be known as Macheso’s initiative. This marked a significant milestone in his career, as the band became one of the most popular in Zimbabwe and across southern Africa.

Macheso is celebrated for his unique blend of Sungura music, a genre that incorporates traditional Zimbabwean rhythms with elements of Congolese rumba and modern influences. His songs often feature socially relevant themes and commentary on everyday life.

His hit songs and albums have earned him a loyal fanbase locally and internationally. He is recognized as one of Zimbabwe’s most successful and influential musicians.

In recent years Macheso has risen to become an advertising face for many corporations that include the country’s leading bakery Bakers Inn, paint company Nash Paints and humanitarian ambassador organization Red Cross.

Macheso is known for his humility and dedication to his craft. He continues to perform and collaborate with other artists, contributing to the growth and popularity of Zimbabwean music.
