Mpofu Orders Halt to ZANU PF Youth League Reshuffle, Demands Politburo Approval

National People’s Conference

ZANU PF Secretary General Obert Mpofu has stepped in to mediate a dispute between ZANU PF Youth League Secretary Tinoda Machakaire and his deputy, John Paradza, regarding a recent reshuffling of the national executive council.

On December 9, 2024, Machakaire announced a reshuffle of the Youth League national executive council without prior consultation. Paradza immediately contested the decision, arguing that it was unconstitutional, and instructed affected officials to retain their positions until Mpofu issued further instructions.

The following day, December 10, Machakaire sent a letter to Paradza, demanding that he retract his statement and warning of consequences if he failed to comply.

However, on December 11, Mpofu intervened, writing to Machakaire and emphasizing that any reshuffling of the Youth League’s national executive must be approved by the Politburo before it can be implemented.

In his letter, Mpofu criticized Machakaire for acting unilaterally, stating that the reshuffle lacked proper consultation and could cause divisions within the Youth League, potentially undermining trust in leadership. He referred to the party’s constitution, which requires consultation with the Youth League’s National Assembly and ratification by the Politburo or Central Committee for any changes to be valid.

Mpofu reminded Machakaire that leadership decisions must align with democratic principles, collective leadership, and the party’s constitutional framework. He called for future decisions of this nature to be made through proper channels, ensuring transparency, consultation, and adherence to procedural integrity.

Mpofu concluded by stating that the matter would be forwarded to the Party leadership for further deliberation and guidance.
