Grace Mugabe Ordered to Facilitate Exhumation as Court Inspects Mugabe’s Burial Locations

Grace Mugabe

Chinhoyi Magistrate Kudzanai Mahaso has approved a request from village head Tinos Manongovere for an inspection in loco at two significant burial sites related to the late former President Robert Mugabe.

The inspection will take place this Thursday at both the National Heroes Acre in Harare, where Mugabe’s remains were originally intended to be buried, and at the family cemetery in Zvimba, where he was eventually laid to rest, according to NewsDay.

An “inspection in loco” is a legal procedure that allows officials to visit and directly assess the physical locations relevant to a legal matter.

Manongovere’s lawyer, Kudzanai Gombiro, confirmed the court’s decision on Wednesday, noting that the inspection would take place at both locations as requested.

Manongovere had previously approached Chief Zvimba’s traditional court, claiming that Mugabe had not been buried according to tradition and that his remains should be reburied at the National Heroes Acre.

Chief Zvimba ruled that Mugabe’s remains be exhumed from the Kutama homestead and relocated to the National Heroes Acre, where a mausoleum had been built for him. Grace Mugabe, the late President’s widow, was found guilty of breaching tradition by burying Mugabe at their homestead and was ordered to facilitate the exhumation. She was fined five cows and two goats for the violation.

Mugabe, who passed away in September 2019 at the age of 95, had been buried at Kutama after a prolonged dispute between his family and the government over his final resting place.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration had sought to have Mugabe interred at the National Heroes Acre in Harare, leading to a stand-off that lasted for nearly three weeks.
