A 39-year-old female sangoma, Catherine Nhongo, has been arrested and charged with aggravated indecent assault after allegedly forcing herself on a 17-year-old boy with mental illness.
The incident occurred on November 10, and Nhongo appeared before Regional Magistrate Donald Ndirowei, who remanded her in custody pending a bail hearing.
According to court records, the victim’s sister met Nhongo while shopping and shared concerns about her brother’s difficulties with speech and other disabilities. Nhongo offered to help heal the boy, and the sister agreed.

Nhongo invited the sister to her home, where she requested beer and cigarettes for spiritual rituals. While the sister’s brother went to buy the items, Nhongo began consuming them and instructed the boy’s brother to stuff mealie meal in the boy’s mouth.
She then touched the boy inappropriately and asked the siblings to leave, claiming she needed privacy for the healing process. Unbeknownst to the siblings, Nhongo allegedly assaulted the boy.
The siblings heard disturbing noises from the house and, upon investigation, found the boy distressed. He used his brother’s phone to reveal the assault, prompting the siblings to call the police.
Nhongo attempted to flee but was apprehended by the boy’s brother. She remains in custody awaiting further court proceedings.
