Worst Fire in Decades Engulfs Mbare Musika, Leaving Trail of Destruction

Witnesses described the recent fire at Mbare Musika as one of the most devastating in the area’s history. The blaze erupted on Tuesday night, rapidly spreading through makeshift shacks and market stalls constructed from flammable materials such as steel, wood, and plastic.

Amid the chaos, residents scrambled to save their belongings, carrying bags and pushing carts, while others assisted those in need. The air was filled with the sounds of distress and crackling debris as the fire reduced homes to ashes, displacing families and leaving many homeless.

Taurai Nendoro, a local resident, said the fire started around 9 PM, though its cause is still unknown. “I’ve lived in Mbare for 30 years and have never seen anything like this,” he said, adding that power outages and the use of candles may have contributed to the fire’s spread.

Vimbai Dandara, another resident, lamented the loss of her home and livelihood. “It’s a disaster. We’ve lost everything, and I have no idea where we’ll go tonight.”

Charles Gomo, a witness, emphasized the psychological trauma faced by those affected. “This is shocking,” he said, referring to the extensive destruction and loss of livelihoods.

The Harare City Council’s fire brigade responded quickly, but water shortages and the densely populated area hampered their efforts. Stanley Gama, the council’s spokesperson, said, “The fire brigade is doing all it can, but water shortages and crowd control issues are slowing progress.”

An investigation into the fire’s cause will follow after it is fully extinguished. Authorities are working to bring the situation under control and assist affected residents.
