Mzansi Magic introduces Obstruction, an inspirational, emotional, and entertaining teen drama

Mzansi Magic introduces Obstruction, an inspirational, emotional, and entertaining teen drama.

With the premiere of its newest drama series, Obstruction, on Monday, March 18, Mzansi Magic is offering viewers a glimpse into the thoughts and lives of teenagers.

Zenokuhle, also known as Luyanda Zuma, is a 17-year-old high school student who aspires to be selected for the Gauteng Provincial Netball Team and make a name for herself in the sport. But getting there doesn’t seem like it will be simple as she faces obstacles that she must overcome head-on.

Obstruction will follow Zeno, a gifted black female adolescent, as she and her friends negotiate their relationships with parents, teachers, potential love interests, foes, and rivals.

In the first episode, Zeno is introduced to her mother Thandiwe (Bukamina Cebekhulu), who she believes is the only person standing in her way of success and who doesn’t recognize the needs she has for netball. This is demonstrated to be accurate when Thandiwe makes the decision to uproot their lives and move her to a new neighborhood and school where she must start over. She must also demonstrate her abilities by attempting to guide a mediocre squad to the Netball championship.

Unbeknownst to Zeno, her mother’s love for her daughter has caused her to break her back, all in order to hide her father’s serious gambling addiction, which is the real obstacle preventing Zeno from realizing her dreams. She also has to deal with new classmates, some of whom are not too happy to have her around, and a romantic interest who is about to rock her world even more.

“This is a story of a lot of young people in our society nowadays – faced with the pressure to succeed, to be liked by peers, to have an emotionally stable family life, and also nail it in the relationship department,” says Shirley Adonisi, M-Net’s Director for Local Entertainment Channels. “We hope that stories like this one, that we tell on Mzansi Magic, will not only entertain but also shine a spotlight on pertinent themes that many teenagers deal with daily,” says Adonisi.

The cast of Obstruction includes Menzi Biyela who plays Zeno’s father Mandla, Lerato Mokoka (Gomora) featuring as Zeno’s ‘frenemy’ Ora, Nhlanhla Kunene (The River, Adulting) and Thembsie Matu (The Queen).

Tune in to Obstruction from Monday 18 March at 20:00 on Mzansi Magic channel 161, and see whether a Mother’s love can be strong enough to transform a teenager’s self-perceptions and values, thereby changing the course of her future.
