Prevail Delivers Early Independence Gift to Matabeleland South with 100 Boreholes

Prevail Group International has announced that it will drill 100 boreholes in Matabeleland South ahead of this year’s Independence celebrations, handing the province what it calls an “early Independence gift” under the Presidential Borehole Scheme.

The initiative, led by Presidential Advisor Dr Paul Tungwarara, is designed to boost food security, expand rural empowerment, and improve access to clean water in one of Zimbabwe’s driest regions.

Prevail Group International Public Relations Manager, Mrs Tariro Dondo, said the programme will have a transformative impact on communities in Matabeleland South, where water scarcity remains a central development challenge.

“The borehole drilling scheme will benefit the province considering it is in a region where the annual average rainfall is around 200 millilitres,”
“This initiative will improve food security, strengthen empowerment and create jobs both upstream and downstream in the area,” said Mrs Dondo.

She said the rollout is timed to honour the significance of this year’s Independence celebrations, which will be hosted in the province for the first time in several years.

“This is our early Independence gift to the people of Matabeleland South.
“We want communities to celebrate Independence knowing that sustainable development is reaching their doorsteps, and that clean water, agriculture and rural enterprises are being strengthened,” she said.

The 100‑borehole programme is part of a wider national exercise Prevail has been implementing across multiple provinces under the Presidential Borehole Scheme.
The organisation has already drilled boreholes and installed equipment in several regions countrywide, with each site designed to support irrigation, household water supply and community economic activities.

The new Matabeleland South phase is expected to accelerate rural transformation in one of Zimbabwe’s most water‑stressed areas, aligning with Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) objectives of inclusive growth and improved livelihoods.

Drilling teams are expected to begin work immediately, with installations set to be completed before Independence Day.
